FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Does Cledo replace my accountant?
For most single-director limited companies with straightforward finances, yes. Cledo handles bookkeeping, VAT returns, Corporation Tax (CT600), confirmation statements (CS01), and annual accounts. For complex situations like R&D credits, business restructuring, or IR35 queries, the Complete+Accountant plan gives you unlimited access to a qualified UK accountant.
Can Cledo handle VAT and annual filing workflows?
Yes. Cledo files VAT returns directly with HMRC via Making Tax Digital, prepares CT600 Corporation Tax returns with iXBRL-tagged accounts, files CS01 confirmation statements with Companies House, and generates FRS 105 micro-entity annual accounts.
Is this built for sole traders or limited companies?
Both. Cledo supports UK limited companies (VAT, CT600, CS01, annual accounts) and self-assessment for sole traders and company directors. The personal tax module auto-populates employment income and dividends from your company data.
What data do I need to connect?
Your company number (for Companies House data) and a business bank account via TrueLayer Open Banking (read-only, FCA-regulated). Cledo does not store your bank credentials — authentication is handled securely by TrueLayer.
How is my financial data protected?
All data is hosted on Google Cloud Platform in London. Sensitive fields are encrypted with AES-256-GCM. HMRC tokens are encrypted at the application level. We use TLS 1.3 in transit, essential cookies only, and restrict production access to essential personnel.
What happens if I need help with something unusual?
The Complete+Accountant plan (£29/month) provides unlimited access to a qualified UK accountant (ACA/ACCA certified) via messaging and video calls. No per-call fees, no hourly rates, and a 4-hour response SLA.
Can I try it before committing?
Yes. Sign up and connect your company for free. You can explore the dashboard, categorise transactions, and review reports. Filing to HMRC and Companies House requires a paid plan.
Do you mark up government fees?
Never. Government filing fees (e.g. CS01 £50/year) are shown separately and passed through at cost. Our pricing page lists every statutory fee transparently.
What happens to my data if I cancel?
Your data is retained for 30 days after cancellation. You can export your records at any time. Financial records required by HMRC are retained for six years as required by law. After 30 days, remaining non-statutory data is permanently deleted upon request.
What is Making Tax Digital and does it affect me?
Making Tax Digital (MTD) is HMRC's programme requiring businesses to keep digital records and submit returns through compatible software. MTD for VAT is already mandatory for VAT-registered businesses. MTD for Income Tax starts April 2026 for self-employed people earning over £50,000. Cledo is HMRC-recognised MTD software.
